You get told you dress too “Madison Avenue” for Wall Street and you get asked to leave the room so the guys can repeat their sexist/misogynist jokes. Yet they tell you endlessly how they want to promote and develop women, and wail and gnash their teeth about the female executive attrition rate. For supposedly smart people, they can’t see a pretty plain causal relationship right in front of them.
You see, procrastinators tend to be people who have, for whatever reason, developed to perceive an unusually strong association between their performance and their value as a person. This makes failure or criticism disproportionately painful, which leads naturally to hesitancy when it comes to the prospect of doing anything that reflects their ability — which is pretty much everything.
